A Day in the Life of a Community Support Worker

As written by CSW Tara, the day to day experience as a CSW can vary greatly and is determined by the needs and choices of the person being supported.

“Each day as a community support worker is truly unique. Each consumer that I work with has different needs, so the role I play within their lives is different.”

“Even with Scott, different days require different tasks. On days where Scott doesn’t have anything planned, he gets my attention when he wants to get out of bed and we start the day when he’s ready. I assist him to have a shower, get dressed, have breakfast, and remind him to take his medication.

Although it’s not his favourite, I help motivate Scott to do his daily exercises to keep his muscles strong and maintain his current mobility. When the hard work is out of the way, Scott usually enjoys playing on his computer, which is a good time for me to fit in some household cleaning.”

After lunch, he’ll often want to watch a movie or a series on Netflix, so we sit down and watch together.

“Other days are a bit busier. When Scott has an appointment to attend, or has an activity planned, I usually wake him up at the appropriate time. On Sundays (weather permitting), it’s off to sailing. We do the morning routine like usual, then I transport Scott down to the lake. Scott has a modified van – all I have to do is pull down a ramp and he drives straight in.

At the sailing club, I assist Scott to get in and out of the boat, but other than that he’s certainly the captain. We might have lunch down at the lake, otherwise it’s off home for a relaxing afternoon.”

Scott’s story is captured on video, and Tara speaks about her role in Scott’s recovery.
